Erv was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Herreid, SD; of Grace Lutheran Church in Washington, DC; of South Canyon Lutheran Church in Rapid City, SD; of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Aberdeen, SD; and finally the First Baptist Church at Socorro, NM.
He was born on a family farm in Campbell County, SD, on September 26, 1926, to John K. and Eva (nee Rudolf) Wiest. He attended country grade school, graduated from high school, earned a Business Degree in 1951, and a Law Degree in 1953, both at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. In the fall of 1953 Erv enlisted in the Navy and served most of the next two years at the Naval Communications Station in Washington, DC. Returning home in 1955, he opened a law practice in Herreid, and served as the City Attorney and Campbell County States Attorney. He married Ann Grosz in 1958. The family moved to Rapid City in 1968 where Erv assisted in organizing the Federal Investment Corporation and Dakota National Life Insurance Company. Late in 1969 he accepted a position with the IRS as an Estate and Gift Tax Attorney for the Aberdeen area, later covering the entire State of South Dakota. In 1990 he left the IRS to resume the practice of law in Ipswich acting as the attorney for both the towns of Ipswich and Bowdle. About two years later he moved his practice into Aberdeen and retired there in 2002.
Erv is survived by his wife Ann of Socorro, NM, four sons - Aaron (Mary) of Mina, SD, Brad (Nancy) of Bend, Oregon, Nathan of Rock Springs, WY, and Paul (Rose) of Socorro, NM; brother Clayton of Carlsbad, CA, nine grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. One son, a brother, and both parents preceded Erv in death. Services in memory of "Erv" Wiest (age 90) will be held Friday, December 23, 2016 at 4:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Socorro. The Reverend Phillip Smith will officiate. The cremains will be buried by the family at a later date.
