Mary Cruz

October 26, 1923 — March 1, 2021

Mary Cruz, our beloved mother, passed away on March 1, 2021. She was born in San Luis, CO on October 26, 1923. She was raised in Alamosa, CO and graduated from Adams State College in 1945. Mary was a respected teacher in the Taos Municipal Schools for 37 years. She loved working with children. She also taught catechism at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Taos, NM. Mary volunteered at the Veteran’s Hospital when she moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1996, She was an avid and loyal Lobo basketball fan. She enjoyed bowling, gardening, travel and casino outings. Mary also enjoyed playing the piano. Her dedication and love of family was a driving force in her life.
 
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Frank E. Cruz; parents, Domitila and Federico Gonzales; in-laws, Elvira, “Vila” and Alberto Cruz; her three brothers and two sisters. She is survived by daughters, Geri (Jim), Jean Cruz; brother, Arnold Gonzales; grandchildren: Frank Griego (Stephanie), Marian Matuska (Dave), Antonio Lopez (Felicia); great granddaughters: Heather and Lauren Griego, Nevaeh and Lynnea Lopez, Faith and Hope Matuska. Other survivors include beloved family members, nieces, nephews and cousins.
 
A heartfelt thank you to Legacy Hospice staff and her loyal and loving caregivers: Frank Griego, Maria Rodriquez and Maylen Basulto.
 
A Memorial Mass will be held Monday, March 15, 2021, 10:00 A.M. at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 5311 Phoenix Ave. NE, Albuquerque, NM. Covid-19 protocol will be followed. Her burial and Celebration of Life will take place in Taos, NM at a later date.
