Abraham Solomon Chanin

September 19, 1921 — February 1, 2014

Abraham (Abe) S. Chanin joined his wife Mildred in eternal peace on the first day of February, 2014. He was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1921 and moved to Tucson, AZ in 1928. He became a true westerner and was even in the movie Arizona, atop his favorite horse. He graduated from Tucson schools including a Journalism degree from the University of Arizona, after being overseas in a WWII infantry division. He brought energy and insight to both sports and editorial writing during 36 years at the Arizona Daily Star, where he founded the Arizona Daily Star Sportsmens Fund to give youth-at-risk a camp experience. He was also editor and publisher of The Arizona Post, a newspaper for the Tucson Jewish community, and Collegiate Baseball, a national publication. He was proud that both of those publications continue today with new leadership and titles. After retiring from the Arizona Daily Star, he taught what he had learned in the University of Arizona Journalism Department (1976-1988) and created and directed the Bloom Southwest Jewish Archives at the University of Arizona (1988-1994). He wrote several books on topics ranging from U of A athletic history to freedom of the press and Jewish history. He was also a frequent speaker and directed multiple educational tours with his wife Mildred as a way of living up to his pledge to take her around the world. He received many honors over his very active life but was most proud of his wife Mildred, his daughter Beth and her husband Dr. Lance Rudolph and their son Sean Rudolph, wife Anna Jancewicz and grandson Jona and his many students and staff members that he mentored. Even as a workaholic, his live focused on family and friends. He and his wife moved to Albuquerque early in this century to be with family. Special thanks go to his many friends, colleagues, extended family, and all his recent caretakers, especially Patricia Ramczyk and Companion Care. Burial will take place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, Rabbi Min Kantrowitz presiding, on February 7, 2014. Anyone wishing to memorialize Abe should contribute to the Arizona Daily Star Sportsmens Fund, Roadrunner Foodbank, the Jewish Academy of Arts and Sciences, or the charity of their choice. A good life lived well.
