Quant, Alfred James, age 92, a resident of Albuquerque since 1952 passed away Friday, May 24, 2013 peacefully at home. Al was born November 15, 1920 to Rudolph Henry Quant and Margaret Mary Shannon Quant in Chicago, Ill. Taking a year off during college to work in the steel mills of Gary, Indiana, Al graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1943, after which he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Following completion of training at the Columbia University Midshipmen�s School in New York City, Al rose to the rank of Lieutenant (jg) and was skipper of a PT Boat stationed in the Philippines. Following the conclusion of WWII, Al was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy but later served for many years as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Al completed his formal education and received a M.S. in Chemistry from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1948. After working for General Electric, he moved across the country to work with a scientific research and development project near Richland, WA. It was there he met Barbara Jo Hardy, originally of Washington, IL, and they were married on July 28, 1951. In 1952, Al accepted a position with Sandia National Labs after which Barb and he moved to Albuquerque, where he worked in the weapons program as a chemical engineer, until his retirement in 1982. Al greatly enjoyed the outdoors, particularly fly fishing, skiing and sailing, from the time he was a young man through his retirement years, and was actively involved in the creation of both the Albuquerque Ski Club and the New Mexico Yacht Club. He particularly enjoyed Mexico�s Sea of Cortez, sailing and fishing from his own boat in the San Carlos, Sonora and La Paz, Baja Sur areas. Al was preceded in death by his wife Barbara; brother, Wilbur; sister, Lorraine Preis; nephew, Ken Preis; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Hazelwood. He is survived by sons Steve and Rick; grandchildren, Ryan, Rowdy and Hardy, all of Albuquerque. Al will be greatly missed. Services will be at 12 noon on Saturday, June 1, 2013 in the Daniels Family Funeral Services Chapel located at 7601 Wyoming Blvd. NE, immediately followed by burial at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, located at the corner of Wyoming and Paseo del Norte.
