Alfred D.C. Ortiz, 87
Alfred “Al” Ortiz of Rio Rancho, NM passed away Thursday, April 5, 2018 at his home surrounded by family and abundant love. A celebration of life service will begin at 2pm (viewing) followed by a service at 3pm by Pastor Kent Bernard on Tuesday April 10, 2018 at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 4310 Sara Road, Rio Rancho, NM. We encourage those that attend to wear colorful attire for his celebration of his colorful life! (Al loved wearing Hawaiian shirts). Burial will take place on Monday, April 16, 2018 at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM at 10:30am 501 N. Guadalupe St. Santa Fe, NM.
Alfred was born on September 22, 1930 in Santa Fe to Frank and Margaret Ortiz. He was a graduate from Santa Fe High School and attended the College of Santa Fe. He joined the National Guard/ US Army Reserve and served for 42 years with pride and love for his country. Alfred was a civil engineer with the NM State Highway Dept. and Zia Engineering, He was involved in many organizations; Knights of Columbus, Santa Fe Fiesta Caballeros, NM Fish & Game Reserve Officer, Youth football league coach, NRA instructor, Prison Fellowship Chaplin over 25 years in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, hospice volunteer, served in Ministries in Mexico building schools, Elks Club member, DAV Commander, Toastmaster and Senior Olympics (powerlifting).
His passions were working on the family ranch, hunting, fishing and gardening. He loved Notre Dame and Raiders football. He was a talented artist and an avid storyteller. Alfred loved his pets; Rex, Prince and Roxy.
Alfred is survived by his wife Virginia G. Ortiz, daughters Suzette Meloling (Everette, Jordan and Elijah), Yvonne Ortiz (A’marie Sellers) and Alicia and John Boal (Eva). Also children from a previous marriage; Olivia and Bruce Lanphar (Jonathan, Rebekah and Jesse Netzloff), Mardell and Anthony Trujillo (Joshua, Jacob and Andel), David Ortiz (David Jr.), Arthur and Beverly Ortiz (Marissa Schenkman and Adam Ortiz), Teresa and Dennis Casados (Serena Rodriguez, Ryan Serrano, Eric Serrano), Alan and Larissa Ortiz (Jayden and Alec) and sixteen great grandchildren and three nieces and six nephews.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Margaret Ortiz, Brother Frank Jr., Sister Adelina Ortiz de Hill, son-in-law Monte Netzloff, daughter–in-law Kathy Ortiz, great granddaughter Ellie Netzloff and nephew Paul Hill.
