Alice L. Hickman, 84, of Aztec, passed away on January 19, 2011, in Aztec.
She was born on November 12, 1926, in Farmington to Roy and Babe Sullivan. Alice grew up on the San Juan River near Bloomfield. Her grandfather was the first territorial sheriff of San Juan County and both her father and brother were also sheriffs. She rode a horse to school everyday in Bloomfield. She graduated from Aztec High School where she met her husband, Bill, whom she married in 1948. Alice was recruited right after high school to teach in the Aztec Public Schools due to a shortage of teachers in World War II. She taught in Bloomfield and Aztec for over 30 years and became one of the first women to graduate from the College of Santa Fe in 1967. Alice loved gardening and often entered exhibits in the floral shows at the county fair. She was a member of the Aztec Desert Planters Garden Club and was also an active member of the Aztec Presbyterian Church and choir. Alice was strong independent woman, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be missed by many. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Hickman; her parents; brothers, Dan and Bruce Sullivan; and sisters, Viola Vanderwerker and Betty Webb. Alice is survived by her sons, Larry (Sandy) Hickman and Gary Hickman; daughter, Darlene Womble; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Danny Sullivan, Mike Sullivan, Artie Sullivan, Aaron Hickman, Harley Stotts, Devin Verhultz, and Jackie Graham. Memorials may be made to the Aztec Presbyterian Church.
