Popolato, Alphonse
Age 94 of Rio Rancho, NM entered his eternal home in Heaven on Wednesday, January 28, 2015. Al (Pop) was born in Flushing, Queens, NY on August 18, 1920. He earned his Bachelor of Science degrees from St. Francis College ‘42 (Chemistry) and Virginia Polytechnic Institute ’44 (Chemical Engineering). He served in the US Army and was a true American hero who played an integral part in the Manhattan Project, which contributed to the successful conclusion of WWII. He enjoyed a distinguished career working as a Chemical Engineer at Los Alamos National Laboratory before retiring to Belen, NM in 1979. Pop was a terrific family man who provided for his immediate family as well as extended family members. He was an avid golfer who also enjoyed reading, cruising, and dancing with his wife. Pop will be deeply missed and remembered for his quick wit, keen sense of humor, gentle spirit, kindness toward others, and words of wisdom. He always had a song in his heart, a kind salutation on his lips and spontaneous serenades to share.
He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Frances.
He is survived by his son, Joe (Jolene) of Rio Rancho; daughter, Annette (John) Turrietta of Rio Rancho; daughter, Mary (Mike) Broach of Birmingham, AL; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews from the Flynn and Durham families.
A celebration of Pop’s life will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Daniels Family Funeral Services, Sara Chapel, 4310 Sara Road SE, Rio Rancho, NM. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer contributions be made to Hospice Compasas, 6000 Uptown Blvd. Suite 104 Albuquerque, NM 87110.
