Burtis, Alyce Rodgers
Alyce Rodgers Burtis, 95, passed away on January 11, 2017.
After completing her undergraduate education at Syracuse University, she spent much of her career as a High School Librarian and later as Media Center Director. She completed her Master’s Degree in Library Science at Columbia University while working full time, and continued to advance her education by taking graduate level courses from Rutgers, Seton Hall, and Trenton State Teacher’s College. Her perception of how to think of the needs of her students caused her to introduce circulation of all kinds of media and media-related items such as non-fiction books, fiction books, magazines, filmstrips, transparencies, movies, and even personal computers. While other contemporaries were circulating many of these types of media, no one else went so far as circulating personal computers. The range of media she circulated had outgrown the confines of the definition of the word “Library”, so she changed peoples’ perception by calling it the “Media Center”. In addition to the circulated media, her Media Center provided classroom support by loaning media equipment such as projectors, screens, and audio devices. She also pioneered the creation of a group of student volunteers who were knowledgeable in setting up and running the audio-visual equipment.
She was a past president of the New Jersey Schoolwomen’s Club, and assisted in many audits of high schools for the State of New Jersey.
An unshakable accent from her roots in North Carolina provided welcome amusement to her students while treating them to an encyclopedic knowledge of English History and American Sports. She was a favorite chaperone on many student trips, and traveled to destinations as diverse as Washington DC, Austria, and Russia.
After her retirement, she enjoyed many new hobbies such as needlework and quilting, while maintaining her interests in travel, sports, world history, and of course reading.
She is survived by her son Donald, daughter-in-law Edy, granddaughters Elizabyth Harrington and Tracey Chavez, five great-grandkids, and two great-great-grandkids.
