Amelita Mariam Toya Toledo went into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 13, 2014. Born August 20, 1916, Amelita was of Jemez and Pecos descent. In her 98 years, Amelita witnessed her beautiful homeland of Jemez Pueblo transition from a small village of the 1800's to the technology-filled community of the 2000's. She grew up tending her family's fields of chile and corn, and spent her last years assisting with the abundant harvest. She married her high school sweetheart, José Rey Toledo, in 1938 and supported his career in education and public health which took them to Santa Fe, North and South Dakota, Laguna Pueblo, and back to Jemez. Amelita was an accomplished potter and seamstress, devoted homemaker, and avid word search puzzlemaster. Amelita was a beloved elder and grandma to all who met her. She is preceded in death by her husband José Rey Toledo, son Stephen Ortiz Toledo, and sister Juanita Toledo. Amelita is survived by her children Adelina (Don) Defender, Allan (Loretta) Toledo, Wilma Toledo, Mary (Richard) Tang, Michael (Theda) Toledo, June (Jay) Leonard, and James Ernest (Stephanie) Toledo; her grandchildren, Stephen Defender, Richard Toledo, Charlotte Breeden, Janice King, Lorne Toledo, Amy Tang, Daniel Tang, Cassandra Toledo, Marc Emerson, and Mark Toledo, and 16 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 16 at 10 a.m. at Jemez Valley Baptist Church in Cañon, NM where Amelita was a lifetime member.
