Hoffman, Ann Marie 9-4-1923 to 4-20-2013 Beautiful Annie shot straight into heaven Saturday morning. Born Anka Salopek in the rich dark earth of a wheat field at Selo-Salopek, outside of Ogulin, Yugoslavia. At the age of 6, she traveled with her Mama and two older brothers across Europe, the Atlantic, through Ellis Island, and across the US to El Paso, TX with pieces of paper attached to their clothing so people would guide them to their destination. There they met her father who had a goat farm in White Spur, TX. At the age of 13, she moved with her family to Mesilla valley. There she attended Loretto Academy, a catholic girl school, with her tuition being paid with bales of hay and chickens. Upon graduation, Annie attended Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in El Paso, TX. Through her brother John, she met her husband, Harold Hoffman, a member of the USAF. Through their 60 years of marriage, they traveled the US and world. They were blessed with seven children, Harold Jr., Judith (husband Pat), Gloria, Bill (wife Elizabeth), Bob (wife Mylene), Don (wife Vicki), Mary, eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and an abundance of nieces of nephews. In 1956, Annie's husband and father both were afflicted with cancer, and at this difficult time, Annie was blessed with a deep relationship with St. Cabrini. This evolved into close relationships with the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart throughout the world. St. Cabrini helped Annie with the loss of her son Harold Jr. in 1970. Annie was an award winning bread maker. She won Best of Show six times at the NM State Fair with her pecan bread, being written up in the Albuquerque Journal as the Albuquerque Flour Power House, 9-20-1976. Growing up as a peasant girl, Anka only had one doll, which her brothers opened up to see what was inside. This incident led to an abundant collection of dolls and stuffed animals in what is now known as "Fantasy Land." Thank you Mom for your love, fun, generosity, wisdom, devotion and concern.
