Arthur William St. George

July 29, 1944 — February 10, 2025

Bernalillo

Arthur William St. George II lived a life guided by intellect, curiosity, and an appreciation for the world around him. A dedicated scholar and mentor, he passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025, in New Mexico at the age of 80.

Born in Burbank, California, on July 29, 1944, Arthur displayed a lifelong passion for education and the pursuit of knowledge. He earned degrees in Physics, Sociobiology, Psychology and Quantitative Social Science from Stanislaus State College in 1966, followed by a Ph.D. in Sociology from UC Davis in 1974. An Associate Professor Emeritus in Sociology at the University of New Mexico, Arthur spent nearly 40 years inspiring countless students. A published author, his career also included time spent as a Program Director with the National Science Foundation overseeing its Applications of Advanced Technologies and Networking Infrastructure for Education initiatives. He even did cool, innovative, top secret stuff at George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch.

An eclectic aficionado, Art’s passions extended beyond academia. A nationally ranked tennis player in his youth, he was also an avid sailor who loved the waters of San Diego. His worship of nature was evident in his constant and consistent support as a Life Member of the Sierra Club and, as a devoted advocate for animal rescue and champion of rescue organizations, he truly never met a dog that he didn’t love.

Arthur was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Robinson St. George. He is survived by his son, Aaron St. George, and daughter-in-law, Rebecca Vanucci-St. George; daughter, Amitai Slepian, and son-in-law, Eric Slepian; and grandchildren, Connor and Clara St. George, and Aston and Chelsea Pierce.

Per Art’s wishes, there will be no service. In his memory, the family requests donations be made to the Sierra Club, reflecting his never ending commitment to environmental conservation.

Arthur will be remembered for his keen mind, his adventures and travels, and the lives he touched through the knowledge and wisdom he so freely shared.
