Emerson died March 9, 2010, in Gallup. He was born Aug. 9, 1943, in Thoreau, into the Salt People Clan for the Apache People Clan. Emerson attended Albuquerque Indian School and Stewart School in Nevada. He worked for the Navajo Tribe in Grants as a welder helper and had numerous odd jobs. His hobbies included playing cards, cooking, fixing things and enjoyed old movies, going to basketball games and spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Lolita P. Emerson of Thoreau; sons, Austin Emerson Jr., Carl Emerson of Thoreau; daughter, Linda Emerson of Thoreau; brother, Gene Emerson of Sanders; sisters, Ann Blacklidge of Belen, Florence Reed of Thoreau; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. Emerson was preceded in death by his parents, John Emerson Sr., Norma M. Emerson; son, Elmer Emerson; daughter, Marlinda Emerson; brother, Johnnie Emerson; one granddaughter. Pallbearers will be Ryan Vandever, Kyle Garcia, Carl Emerson, Gerard Emerson, Jimmy Emerson, Rolland Martinez. Arrangements are entrusted to: Cope Memorial Chapel 1830 Barbara Ave.
