Barbara Gayle (Finley) Gardner, passed away peacefully in the early hours of June 19, 2024 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Born on December 22, 1938 in Brownfield, Texas, Barbara grew up in Albuquerque, where she graduated from Valley High School. In 1965, she married her beloved husband, Sheldon Gardner, a dedicated member of the U.S. Air Force. Together, Barbara and Sheldon, and their two daughters, Teresa and Nancy, lived in various locations across the United States before retiring in their home town of Albuquerque.
Barbara was deeply loved and cherished by her family and friends. Her warm, welcoming nature was evident in her open heart, open arms, and generous hugs. She made lasting friendships wherever she went, whether through her travels, the Faith Lutheran community, the “Single Sisters” or the Red Hat Society. Barbara’s strong faith and active involvement in her church community were cornerstones of her life.
As a role model to her family, Barbara led by example, embodying grace, kindness and care. She held a special place in the hearts of her loved ones, valuing her family and close friends dearly.
Barbara found joy in many activities, including hosting tea parties, entertaining guests, gardening, arts and crafts, attending theater performances, playing Scrabble and watching basketball games—both the UNM Lobos and the Golden State Warriors. She enjoyed traveling, exploring countries such as Germany, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Canada, Mexico and the Bahamas. Known for her elegance and fashion sense, Barbara’s hair was always beautifully styled.
Her grandchildren were the highlight of her life, and she delighted in spending time with them, playing card games, chess and checkers, going fishing, and enjoying overnight stays. She was extremely proud of their accomplishments.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvia and Bryce Finley, and her soulmate, Sheldon (March 30, 2008). She is survived by her daughters, Teresa (Larry) Schneider and Nancy (David) Giblin, her grandchildren, Sydney Schneider and Max (Callie) Giblin, her great-grandchildren, Zara, Holden, and Rowan, and many dear friends.
In her later years, Barbara's graciousness and humor remained steadfast. The family wishes to express tremendous and heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Sugar Hollow, Grace House and Roadrunner Hospice for their loving, gentle and compassionate care of Barbara and our family.
While our hearts mourn the loss of our treasured mother, grandmother and dear friend, we take comfort in knowing she is now carefree and reunited with her forever soulmate, Sheldon, who has been patiently waiting for his Dear Girl in their heavenly home. A private family service will be held on August 17th at Faith Lutheran Columbarium.
In honor of Barbara’s memory, contributions may be made to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (curealz.org), ensuring that 100% of donations go directly to support Alzheimer research.
Barbara will be lovingly remembered for her warm heart, unwavering faith and the profound love she shared with her family and friends.
