Barbara Agnes Oravecz née Balfe
Barbara Agnes Oravecz, age 86, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her two children, at Casita Senior Living in Albuquerque, NM, where she received loving care in her final years. The family would also like to express their sincere gratitude to Ambercare Hospice for the compassionate and comforting care provided to Barbara.
Born in Mohale’s Hoek, Lesotho, in 1939, she spent her early years in Leribe before her family relocated to Ficksburg, South Africa. Barbara attended the Sisters of Notre Dame Convent de Namur in Kroonstad and later pursued her nursing education at Grey’s Hospital in Natal, graduating in 1957.
Barbara’s adventurous spirit took her across Africa with friends, immersing herself in its diverse cultures. She also spent a year in England with her friends, working as a nurse while reconnecting with relatives. Her travels extended across Europe, where she embraced new experiences—from skiing in Switzerland to hitchhiking across England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland, always eager to explore and forge lasting memories.
She met and married her husband, Kálmán Oravecz, in Johannesburg, South Africa, and together they raised three children: István, Ildikó, and Kálmán. In 1977, the Oravecz family moved to Socorro, New Mexico, when Kálmán accepted a teaching position at New Mexico Tech’s Mining and Mineral Engineering Department.
Barbara was known for her graciousness, always polite with a delightful spark. She loved playing tennis with Kálmán and was a longtime member of the Socorro Tennis Association. A dedicated gardener and an avid reader, she enjoyed participating in a local book club for many years.
Barbara dedicated a significant portion of her life to serving others, both professionally and through volunteerism. Her long and impactful career at Socorro General Hospital saw her progress through various roles, culminating in her position as a Discharge Planner. In this capacity, her compassion and unwavering dedication ensured patients received the support necessary for a seamless transition from hospital care.
This commitment to healthcare extended beyond her professional life into her volunteer efforts. Driven by a deep sense of community, Barbara contributed countless hours to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, inspired by her sister Kathleen's courageous battle. She also actively supported the Women's Auxiliary to the International Mining Engineers (WAIME), aligning with her husband's professional endeavors. As a longtime member of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization), she championed educational opportunities for women. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she remained actively involved in her local parish, participating in numerous ministries and outreach programs.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Kálmán, her youngest son, Kálmán Peter, "KP," and her parents. She is survived by her sister, Kathleen Balfe of Johannesburg, South Africa; her son, István, and daughter-in-law, Sue; her daughter, Ildikó, and son-in-law, Kevin Bryant; as well as her many cherished nieces and nephews in Hungary. Her spunky and giving presence will be deeply missed.
