Berta Chacon

Berta Margarita Chacon passed away peacefully and surrounded by her loving family on February 24, 2025 in Albuquerque, NM at the age of 83. Born on March 13, 1941 in Ysleta, TX, she was the second sibling of five children born to Isaac and Anita Ortega. As a young girl she worked in her parents’ store and helped raise her two younger brothers. This upbringing helped her develop a strong work ethic. She attended Our Lady of The Valley Catholic School, graduated from Ysleta High School, and attended the University of Texas at El Paso for two years. Berta married her high school friend Victor Chacon on July 4, 1964 and became a U.S. Navy wife while Victor served his country for thirty years. Berta enjoyed experiencing Honolulu, San Francisco, Corpus Christi, Dunoon (Scotland), Orange Park, and Albuquerque during the decades Victor was in active service. While in Scotland she enjoyed collecting antiques from the local shops and traveling around Scotland and other European cities like Copenhagen, London, Paris, and Rome. She was the ideal military wife---brave, independent, caring and loving. When new orders came in, she would prepare her family for the next move. She raised three sons, often while her husband was stationed away. Through it all she independently adjusted to new schools and new surroundings while creating a loving home with every move. A devout Catholic, Berta was a faithful member of multiple parishes, most recently Risen Savior Catholic Church of Albuquerque, NM. She served in several ministries and coordinated Lunch with the Lord for twenty years. Berta loved celebrating the holidays with her family and she took pride in being a servant to her church and community, whom she served humbly and cheerfully. One of her personal traits was donating to different local and national charities. Later in life she loved to travel with her husband and friends to many cities, as well as visit national parks and monuments via motorcoach, planes, trains, and cruise ships. She was an avid sports fan and loved the Golden State Warriors and the Kansas City Chiefs. She attended many MLB, NFL and NBA sporting events in addition to United States Naval Submarine Reunions, visiting museums and local attractions with other Navy veteran families. Berta is survived by her loving husband of sixty-one years, Victor. She is also survived by her sons Victor Chacon Jr (wife Ann Chacon), Kevin Chacon, David Chacon (former wife Heather Chacon), her grandchildren (Amanda Wittrup, Noah Chacon, Ivy Chacon, Graeme Chacon), and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. She is loved.
