Billy Jack Cooper

Billy Jack Cooper, 87, of Albuquerque, passed unexpectedly at his home on February 22. Bill was born December 24, 1928 in Hodgen, Oklahoma. He was a Choctaw tribal member, the son of Lois McAlvain Cooper Pugh and grandson of original enrollee Thomas Jay McAlvain. He was also a devoted grandson to Edna Freeman.  He enlisted in the United States Army in 1947 at the age of 18, where he served 24 years, in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars,earning many achievements, including the Bronze Star. After retiring from the Army as a Command Seargent Major, he served 28 years for the USDA as a meat inspector, retiring in 1999.  During his military and civil service careers he lived throughout the United States and the world, making many lifelong friends along the way.  
He was a devoted friend to many and truly enjoyed staying in contact with childhood friends and Army buddies alike. Bill was an active political blogger and guest editorial commenter for his local newspaper where his patriotism and love for his country were  evident. Throughout Bill's life, he had a love for both new and classic cars. He was a devoted member of Celebrate Wesleyan Church and performed extensive volunteer work
with many organizations including the VA, Meals on Wheels, and Lighthouse Mission, among numerous others.

Bill is survived by his loving wife Dorothy; children Caroline Popescu, Catherine Hoisington, Nicole Jackson, Donna Bullington, Joseph Cooper, and Jacqulyn Cooper
Eichhorn; grandchildren Sunshine, Brandon, Justin, Josh, Ashley, Eric, Abigail, Jordan, Olivia, Gayleen, Danny, Stephanie, Rachel, Eric,and Andrew; and 14 great grandchildren; sister Betty Over, Dilla Jean Janisich,and brother Curtis Pugh; and many other extended family members in Oklahoma. Preceded in death by son John Cooper and granddaughter Star Rainey.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, February 27, 11 a.m.at Celebrate Wesleyan Church in Albuquerque.
