Bruce Andrews Caskey was born August 25, 1934, in Wellington Kansas, to Ada Miller Caskey and Glenn Andrews Caskey. When Bruce was six, his parents moved to Artesia, NM, on the advice of the family doctor who said Bruce’s health would improve in a drier climate. He grew up in that small, but progressive, town in southeastern NM, where his mother was choir director of the First Methodist Church and his father worked as an accountant. Music has always been a huge part of family life, and Bruce first sang with his dad in the church choir, and later with the Albuquerque Civic Chorus and other church choirs as well as a men’s quartet. He also played his dad’s baritone horn in high school and college bands.
Bruce attended New Mexico State University, graduating with double majors in mechanical and aeronautical engineering, followed by a year of graduate studies at the University of London. He had a 36 year career at Sandia National Labs, working first in engineering and later as a systems analyst on the big mainframe computers, retiring in 1994. He jumped into retirement with enthusiasm and pursued his hobbies of trains, planes and automobiles. Throughout those years he remained active in an antique car club and toy train club, publishing professional quality newsletters for many years. A devoted family man, he loved spending time with wife Molly and son Paul, especially camping, traveling and attending musical events.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife Molly of fifty years; son Paul Andrews Caskey, his wife Mary and her daughters Hannah and Alexandra; sisters-in-law Helen Lane, Jane Reese and Wynona Walker; brother-in-law David Sample and wife Yvonne; also numerous nephews and nieces who all adored Uncle Bruce.
