Byfield Dewitt “Flash” Gordon, 99 years of age, passed away Friday, November 8, 2019 at his residence in Albuquerque, NM. Born July 15, 1920, in Guthrie, OK, his working years started as a florist working for his father, Edward Gordon, a WWI veteran.
Soon after WWII broke out Byfield joined the Air Force branch of the US Army and became a B-17/24 Bomber pilot and flew 50 missions during the course of the war receiving multiple awards for his service. He was an outstanding representative of what has become know as the ‘Greatest Generation”. After the war he remained in the Air Force and went to a variety of schools earning 2 college degrees. Lt. Col. Gordon retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel on December 31, 1976, after serving for 34 years.
He was a member of “MOA” the Military Officers Association and the Order of Daedalians, an association of military pilots started in WWI. He was also active in many military reunion groups from various time periods and service related activities. He attended the Central United Methodist Church in Albuquerque, NM, and was also very active in church activities.
Lt. Col. Gordon is survived by his wife Dorothy S. Gordon; his son Thomas D. Gordon and his wife Sharon; and grandson W. David Gordon and his wife Vivienne.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Central United Methodist Church, 201 University Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM, on Friday, December 6, 2019 at 9:30 A.M.
