Carl L. "Heavy" Scott

June 10, 1919 — September 20, 2013

Scott, Carl L Age 94, went home to the Lord in his sleep on Friday, September 20, 2013. Carl "Heavy" Scott was born in Milledgeville, TN on June 10, 1919 to Clyde and EulaLee (McComb) Scott. The family moved to eastern New Mexico where they were sharecroppers. Clyde also had a grist mill and a blacksmith shop. Carl grew up in Dora, NM, 25 miles from Portales, NM. He was the second of EulaLee's seven children: Harl, Carl, Orene, Kathleen, Clyde Jr., Rama-Jean and Verl-Dean. EulaLee died when the younger girls were in their early teens. Clyde and his second wife, Marie, had two sons, James and Don; Carl's half-brothers. Carl had a childhood full of much responsibility working on the farm, in the grist mill and the blacksmith shop to help support the family after his father removed him from school when he completed the Third Grade. In the First Grade, Carl was the marble-shooting champion. Carl married Rubye Fisher on December 31, 1937. Carl and Rubye were known to welcome teenaged James and Don into their home as if they were sons and brothers to their own two boys. They celebrated their 75th anniversary this past New Year's Eve. Rubye passed away June 16, 2013. Carl, who was known as Heavy Scott, had a 35 year career as a welder and mechanic, first with his father and then with various road construction companies in east-central NM. He worked with O.C. Cowart Road Construction Company from 1945 to 1970 as the Superintendent of the shop and heavy equipment maintenance. He was a Master Mechanic. Upon retirement, Heavy took the opportunity to work with Lloyd in the Scott's NAPA Auto Supply store in Socorro, NM. He and Rubye moved to Socorro and worked together with Annette and Lloyd at the NAPA Store for several years. In Socorro, Heavy and Rubye joined the Old Car Club and he began to restore old cars from the 20's, 30's and 40's. They often took their restored old cars to events in other states with other Old Car Club members. Carl and Rubye had two sons, Lloyd and David, whom they raised in Albuquerque, NM. They were members of Heights Baptist Church and taught the Sunday School class for four year olds together. After they moved to Socorro, they joined the First Baptist Church. Carl is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 75 years, Rubye Mae; sisters, Verl-Dean Scott, Kathleen Pruitt and Orene Knight; brothers, Harl and James Scott. Carl is survived by his loving sons, Lloyd Scott and wife, Annette, and David Scott and wife, Debbie; brother, Clyde Scott Jr. and wife, Laura, and Don Scott and wife, Erica; sister, Rama-Jean Brown; grandchildren, Deborah Scott, Lori Romero and husband, Frank, and Bryan Scott; great grandchildren, Erin Romero and Randall Romero; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and his caregiver, Sarah Padilla. Carl will be remembered by his family, friends and acquaintances for his honest commitment to excellence in workmanship, his creativity and eagerness to meet a project challenge and his quick wit and love of a joke. Also for his sometimes grumpy cantankerousness, his practical spin to the circumstances of life, his helpful attitude and actions in his areas of expertise, his love for his family and friends, and his quiet loyalty to Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. A celebration of his life and to honor his memory will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church, 203 Spring SW, Socorro, NM with Pastor Paul Holt officiating. Interment will be in the Socorro Cemetery. Pallbearers are Deborah Scott, Bryan Scott, Lori Romero, Frank Romero, Erin Romero, and Randall Romero.
