Charles Ewing Baca, Sr.

d. September 1, 2008

BACA-Charles Ewing Baca, Sr., fondly referred to as "Caballo", found peace on the first day of September after an abundant and momentous 90-year existence. He was a good, gentle man with strength and kindness. He was well loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed. As a lifelong resident of New Mexico, he was a respected citizen born in the barrio of Barelas before Albuquerque considered curbs or pavement. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School, where he met his life-long enamorada. He excelled in athletics, lettering in basketball and football, and graduated from Albuquerque High School in the class of 1939. As a participant in the recovery from the Great Depression, he was in the Civilian Conservation Core during the Great Depression, laying stonework in our national parks. Then, as duty called upon the Greatest Generation, he went "over there", and personally helped liberate Nazi concentration camps. As a WWII veteran, he then returned to lovingly raise four "boomers", who awarded him the wealth of seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He worked to retirement for the A.T.&S.F. Railway and yet maintained an eclectic array of secondary jobs and volunteer work. As an usher for Sacred Heart Church, he would serve in this capacity during Mass or call Bingo games in the evenings. On weekends he would bartend at American Legion Post 72. As caretaker for Heights Community Center's Stadium, he'd collect admission, maintain the field, score keep, and umpire. He refereed city intramural basketball, and was well regarded at any of the city's golf courses. One cannot grieve or miss him any greater than his loving and devoted wife of sixty-six years, Vera Lois Black Baca. Services are entrusted to:
