Christo Martin Jose

October 1, 1991 — June 2, 2015

Jose, Christo Martin
Christo Martin Jose, age 23, passed away Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015. Christo was born in Kerala, India on October 1st, 1991. After moving from India to the UAE and then to Albuquerque, NM, USA, he showed adaptability and resilience through all obstacles of his life. After moving to New Mexico as a child, he made significant research contributions in the field of infectious disease as an undergraduate student at the University of New Mexico. He published two research papers on Chagas disease. Christo earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2011, and then entered the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine Medical Scientist Training Program in 2012 at the age of 20!  He was extremely brilliant, in and out of school. He enjoyed three years in the program during which he volunteered for the Domestic Violence Intervention Program Bench Press Fundraiser, participated in Frolics, competed in intramural volleyball and basketball, and was an active member of the Phi Rho Sigma Fraternity. He loved to share his Indian culture with his friends at Iowa and was a friendly, caring classmate who inspired lively conversation, intense workouts, and had the most radiant of smiles. After a tragic accident on May 18th, 2015, he suffered traumatic brain injury. He passed away on June 2nd, 2015, at the age of 23.

Christo Jose was one of the most loving and kind person that I had ever known. He put the needs of others before himself through his selfless acts. He was a very caring son and brother. His brothers always looked up to him for guidance. Christo was, is, and will remain as a role model for them. He made his parents proud all the time. He loved to make people laugh and everyone used to compliment his 'bear hugs'. His extreme sense of responsibility, sensitivity to others' needs, persistence, hard-working nature, global thinking, and unique personality was always praised by his parents as well as all who knew Christo. He was extremely studious, won several national level achievements both in India and the U.S. He was extremely good at various extra-curricular activities since his childhood and won several prizes. He was active in ROTC while at high school. He helped in the religious educational activities by being a teaching assistant at St. Mary's church and Annunciation parishes while in Albuquerque, NM and also is a member of "Knights of Columbus" at the parish.

As his last act of giving, his organs and tissues were donated to Iowa Donor Network for transplant and research.

With each sad moment, we are reminded that he provided happiness to everyone who knew him. With each moment of disbelief, we are reminded of all the times he made us believe in ourselves. Christo is survived by his father and mother, Jolly and Cicily Joseph, and his two younger brothers, Clement and Edward Jose, in Albuquerque, NM. He will be greatly missed by friends and family. We ask you to keep Christo in your prayers and in your thoughts. He will always be remembered and cherished.
