Worley-McCabe, Delores A
Delores A. Worley passed away July 27th, 2015. She was born March 21, 1942 in New Castle, Indiana. Her blood parents were Mertle V. Slettvet-Worley and Virgil Cecil Worley. From the age of 2 years, Dee was reared by foster parents Malinda J. Hamm-Cornthwaite and Lowell Kimmel Cornthwaite who provided a loving, Christian home. Dee was a lifelong activist for peace and human rights, as well as an advocate for environmental protection. Her membership in the Society of Friends led to her involvement with the Peace Marches of the 60’s and the Civil Rights Movement. She worked with the Cincinnati YWCA and ecumenical Inner City/Over the Rhine projects, which involved the elderly and youth in both Appalachian and black communities. She was involved with the early Pilot City project (a forerunner of Model Cities) which provided comprehensive health and family services for the poor. She attended Earlham College in Indiana; The Instituto de San Miguel in SanMiguel de Allende Qtu, Mexico, where she began making jewelry. She completed her Masters Program at the University of New Mexico in Special Education, earning enough credits to teach in APS and Bernalillo schools. She came to New Mexico in 1971 with her then husband. She started making and selling jewelry in art shows and shops in Old Town. Art and family were lifelong passions and she is survived by her daughter, Michelle, her husband Paul Carter, and their children, Armando Guadiana, David Ream and William Dallas Carter; and her son, Michael R. McCabe and his children Bailey Ann and Benjamin Albert McCabe. In lieu of flowers the family is collecting to help cover funeral expenses. Delores also wished that donations could be made to the UNM Cancer Center or the Wildlife Conservancy.
