Demetrio was called home by our loving Father on Sunday, July 15, 2012 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque. Demetrio retired from the City of Albuquerque in 1993 after 26 years of Service. He was a member of San Jose Parish for 42 years at which time he was a member of the San Jose Society; involved in the Marriage Enrichment Encounters; was an Eucharistic coordinator and Eucharistic administer to the home-bound and hospitals. For the past 15 years Demetrio was a parishioner at Saint Josephs on the Rio Grande Parish . He was a Eucharistic Minster to the home-bound for many years; belonged to the Legion of Mary; St. Charbel monthly prayer group and the Monday night Rosary prayer group. He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Nettie Barela. Demetrio is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Esther, his children, Demetrio I. Barela Jr., Simon I. Barela, Mela and John Livramento, Gerrie and Adrian Maes, Becky and Victor Carrillo and Sandra Barela-Garcia; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Geneieve Zamora, Florinda Lopez and Marcella Lerma; 29 God Children; many nieces; nephews; extended family, friends and his Church Family at the Saint Josephs on the Rio Grande Parish. A Rosary to be recited at St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Catholic Church, 5901 St. Josephs Drive, NW Thursday July 19, 2012 at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will also be celebrated at St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Catholic Church, Friday, July 20, 2012 at 9:00 am; Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Demetrio will be remembered for his warm, gentle nature and will be greatly be missed by those who knew him as a friend and a family man. Pallbearers are Demetrio I.
