Dixie Lee Gribble

September 11, 1951 — March 13, 2025

Dixie Lee Gribble (Rozell), a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away suddenly on Thursday, March 13, 2025, from complications after she fell during a walk with one of her dogs. Dixie was born in Albuquerque, NM, on September 11, 1951, to loving parents Neal and LaTrelle Rozell. Her younger sister, Jerilou, completed the happy family of four.Rooted in the North Valley, Dixie first met Larry at Alameda Baptist Church in middle school. She loved to tell the story about how she attended a church youth auction and was the highest bidder, winning Larry’s hand; he carried her books around, walked her home, and they fell in love! The two were married at Alameda Baptist Church in 1967, and by the spring of 1968, the young couple celebrated the birth of their oldest daughter, Vickie Lee, naming her after a hit song called “Vickie Lee” by The Untouchables. Stephanie Marie came into the world timely on Memorial Day in 1972; Dixie and Larry joked that he didn’t even have to take the day off work for her birth! Hoping for a son, they were surprised to find out when she was 7 months pregnant that twins were on the way, and their family grew by two more when identical twins Shellie Jo and Sherrie Ann arrived in 1975.Larry and Dixie worked tirelessly raising their young family and started Custom Grading, Inc., in 1974. Their successful excavation company thrived and expanded; Dixie filled in at the office when needed and handled every household detail as a devoted full-time homemaker.Dixie was a natural caregiver, always thinking of others and making those around her feel special and loved. Raising her girls, she took time for each daughter and participated in their every hobby and interest. She volunteered at church for decades, providing various services to others. She supported each grandchild, watching them all grow into adulthood. She delighted in her great-grandchildren.Larry and Dixie enjoyed 49 years of marriage by focusing on their shared love for the Lord and their family. She took care of his every need before he passed away in 2016. She also cherished each moment with her mother and tenderly cared for her until her passing in 2021.Dixie’s passion was sewing; she could make dresses, hem clothing, and create almost any type of craft one could imagine. She created dozens of colorful and intricately designed quilts. She won many awards for the quilts she’d entered in the State Fair, including a blue ribbon for “best in show.” Her artistry will be remembered and admired in every quilt and craft she completed with her talented hands.Recently, Dixie decided to move to a new home in a cozy neighborhood and made friends, feeling a content sense of community. Her new house had a large quilting studio she loved, and she had just finished unpacking and was excited to attend some fun sewing classes. She adored her three rescue dogs, Lucy, Gidget, and Digz, and she was looking forward to many more happy years in her new space.Dixie is survived by her daughters Vickie (Ted) Humphrey, Stephanie (James) Montessi, and Sherrie Poyer; also surviving is Dana (Paul) Baxley, her niece, who Larry and Dixie raised as one of their bonus daughters. Her legacy continues with cherished grandchildren Leah Baca, Sarah Scimoné, Mark Montessi, Ryan Taylor, Neal Taylor, John Taylor, and Tobias Poyer.
