Klein, Donald Clyde Jr. a prominent Socorro attorney known for his many, long years of service work, died on Monday afternoon, January 21, 2013 in an Albuquerque hospital after suffering a stroke the previous week. He never regained consciousness, and died with his loving family and close friends at his side. He was 67 years old. Don was born in Dallas, TX and raised in Albuquerque, NM, graduating from Valley High School in 1963. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1967 with a B.A. in Political Science and graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1971. He was admitted to the New Mexico State Bar Association in 1971, and maintained a active practice in Socorro until his sudden passing. Don was a successful trial attorney and once practiced before the highest court in the United States. He served as an Assistant District Attorney in Colfax (Raton) and Bernalillo (Albuquerque) counties. He might have gone on to other judicial successes, but life had other plans for Don. He suffered an accident in the early 1980s that resulted in a series of lifestyle changes, one which brought him to Socorro several years later. He never left. Don was a passionate attorney, known in select circles as a legal genius, prone to the eccentricities and lengthy musings on whatever subject had caught his fancy on any particular day. He was a master of the pun, particularly of the double entendre, quick with a wink and a nod, but he was also a deeply compassionate and caring man. In his later years, he found great strength in attending services at the Epiphany Episcopal Church, making friends among the congregation. He also delighted in his godson, Johnny Woozle, rejoicing in the child's innocence, and in the incredible joy the child found in the simple matter of being. Don also was a source of strength and hope for many in the community who were struggling, who were looking for light in the darkness. He understood their struggles and never turned anyone away - ever. Don lived simply, once remarking that he must be the poorest lawyer in the state of New Mexico. It was a hollow quip, for money meant little to Don - he knew what was important in life, and he dedicated his life to those causes. He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Mozelle (Parks) Klein Sr., an adopted son, Layne Klein, and a brother, David Klein. He is survived by his daughter, Jana Klein of Arkansas; an adopted daughter, Tanya Klein of Albuquerque; his godson; and Dee Omalia, his daughter by choice; his brother, Joseph D. Klein; a nephew, Randy Klein; and niece, Robin Klein. A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the Epiphany Episcopal Church, 908 Leroy Pl. NW, Socorro, NM from 9:00 am to 10:00 am with services to follow at 10:00 am. The Rev. Woody Peabody officiating. Graveside Services will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, Albuquerque, NM on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 3:00 pm.
