Donald Martin Finney, a distinguished individual whose life echoed with purpose and dedication, passed away on January 10, 2025, in Albuquerque. Born on May 13, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan, Donald's journey was marked by an unwavering commitment to service and a profound impact on the lives he touched.
Educated at Wayne State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, and subsequently at National University for his master's degree, Donald exemplified a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. His academic journey laid a strong foundation for a remarkable career as a ROTC teacher for 18 years, where he inspired countless students with his leadership and steadfast commitment to their growth.
Beyond the classroom, Donald dedicated 20 years of his life to the United States Marines, achieving the rank of Major. His military service was characterized by his steadfast devotion and a love for his country that never waned. It was clear throughout his life that he carried the values of discipline, honor, and service in all he undertook. Donald also volunteered at the VA Hospital.
Donald was not only a man of service but also of faith, being a cherished member of Risen Savior Catholic Church. His spiritual life was intertwined with his community, where he shared both his time and heart, enriching the lives of others.
A devoted family man, Donald took great pride in his marriage to his beloved wife, Song Ok Finney, for an admirable 40 years. His dedication to his family only deepened following her passing, as he cherished the bonds he maintained with his children and siblings. He is survived by his daughter, Rosemary Finney of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and brothers Charles J. Finney of South Lyon, Michigan; Paul G. Finney of Homer, Alaska; and Dan Finney of New Orleans, Louisiana. He is also remembered by his sister, Barb T. Wolfe of Westland, Michigan.
Donald’s legacy is enriched by the lessons he imparted and the love he shared, even as he mourns the absence of his beloved wife, Song Ok Hong; his sister, Celeste Finney; and his parents, Charles Finney and Rosemary C. Finney. He leaves behind memories of joy, laughter, and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In addition to his illustrious career and profound commitments, Donald found joy in golfing, a hobby that brought both peace and camaraderie into his busy life. As a man who loved well and lived fully, he leaves a lasting mark on the hearts of all who knew him—a testament to a life well-lived and a spirit enduringly free.
