BOYES-Doris Ann Boyes, 84, a resident of Cedar Crest, NM for 56 years, passed away Friday, April 3, 2009. Doris was born in Meeker, Oklahoma on November 28, 1924. Her father worked for the railroad, and at the age of four they were transferred to Albuquerque. As a child, she sat on the lap of the famous Sheriff Elfugo Baca, whose law office was just blocks away from their home. She graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1943, and attended the University of New Mexico during WWII. She graduated in three years, with dual majors in chemistry and math, and minors in physics and music. At the university, she was a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota Music Honorary. After the war, Doris worked at Sandia National Laboratories, as a math analyst evaluating gunnery trajectories in the Field Test department. In 1949, she married William E. Boyes, and in 1950 they moved to Cedar Crest where they raised their three sons and a daughter in the house they built. At the age of 51, she returned to school to study computer programming. After receiving an Associates degree from the Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute, she worked as a programmer before retiring in 1983. During her life, Doris was active in many community organizations, including the PTA, the Cedar Crest "Stitch and Bitch" Club and the Presbyterian Church. She learned to play the piano and violin while growing up, sang in the church choir, and enjoyed listening to classical and bagpipe music. She also enjoyed gardening at her mountain home, participated in the local gardening club, and particularly loved the first spring forsythias. Doris was devoted to her children and grandchildren, and delighted in sharing family stories. Doris is preceded in death by her husband William and survived by her four children and six grandchildren, including son, John Dana and spouse Linda, his children Jesse and spouse Juliet of Brooklyn, NY, Alan of Kalaheo, HI, and Elizabeth and partner Linnea of Spokane, WA; Son William K. and spouse Laura of Durham, NC, and their daughter Adrian of Richmond, VA; son Lawrence D. of Seattle, WA, and daughter Margaret Spears and her son Evan of Ft. Collins, CO , and Margaret's daughter Megan of San Francisco , CA, Doris is also survived by her sister Ruth Summers and two nieces, Susan and Lynn, and their families.
