Douglas Hines Spence, age 89, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, July 14, 2017.  Doug was born in Crowell, TX in 1928. His family moved to Silver City, NM in 1937. Doug joined the Navy in 1944 at the age of 16. He was stationed in Hawaii. As a seaman first class, he worked as a mechanic on airplanes. Doug received an honorable discharge in 1946 and returned to Silver City. It was there that Doug met the love of his life, Jean. They married in 1948 and started their family. Doug worked at Kennicott Mines until moving to Albuquerque, NM in 1954.

He worked at ACF Industries where he became a manufacturing engineer. Doug then established AA Tool Manufacturing and Century Tile. In 1970, Doug started his machine shop, Sun Country Industries. He retired from there in 1989. Doug enjoyed flying, going boating, playing golf and taking trips in his R.V. He was also very active in tracing his and Jean’s genealogy.

Doug and Jean became members of Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1960. There he served the church in many positions including Ushering, working on the fiancé committee and also was an Elder.

He was preceded in death by his father M.A. Spence and his mother Avie Spence. He was also preceded in death by his son, Larry Spence and his brother Garland Spence.

Doug leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Mavis Jean Spence, daughter Toni Lynn Spence-Gaynor and husband Jim Gaynor. Also, his granddaughter Rahanon Lynn Elsen, grandson Matthew Douglas Gaynor and great-granddaughter Felicia Lynn Elsen. He also leaves behind many nephews, nieces and cousins. Doug will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him dearly.

Doug, you took care of our family like no other man could. You accomplished so many things in life and worked so hard. You have been the most humble, loving caring man that we will ever have the honor of calling out husband, father, grandfather, Papa and most of all our friend.
We are sure God greeted you with open arms.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 20, 2017, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Daniels Family Funeral Services, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7601 Wyoming Blvd. NE, 87109. Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 21, 2017, 10:00 a.m. at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8600 Academy Rd. NE, 87111, with reception and interment to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Fund, http://heightscpc.org.
