Age 81, passed away Monday, May 18, 2015 following a long illness. He was born in New York, New York. Edwin is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Charmaine; daughters, Sharon and Stephanie; son, David; daughter-in-law, Joi; grandchildren, Rachel and Noah; sister, Joan;. He will also be missed by his beloved cat Leona. Dr. Smith was a proud graduate and life-long supporter of the University of Michigan, where he was a member of the track and field team. He attended medical school at New York Medical College, and then pursued specialized training in the field of nephrology. He retired to New Mexico following a successful career as an academic physician with Indiana University. He also served as an Army reservist for over 30 years, retiring with the rank of Colonel. Dr. Smith was an avid fan of all sports with a particular obsession with football, and devoted to all things “Michigan”. He and his wife, often accompanied by his children, cheered on his team in person at “The Big House”, missing only 2 home games (due to illness) since acquiring season tickets in 1975. He was passionate about his golf game, loved to travel, and was an enthusiastic fan of his wife’s culinary skills. Dr. Smith will be buried at Santa Fe National Cemetery, with his wife and children in attendance. A celebration of life service is planned for the future.
