Dr. Rabbi Martin Guttman

GUTTMAN- Dr. Rabbi Martin Guttman, 101, a resident of Rio Rancho, NM passed away March 19, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Susan Guttman; one granddaughter, Yvette Cooper. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Erber. Martin was a graduate of Franz Joseph Seminary, Budapest, Hungary. It was there he became a Rabbi and received his doctorate of Philosophy. In 1944 he was deported to Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp until his liberation in 1945. After being liberated he was a Rabbi in Hungary until 1954. He moved to Israel, where he was a Rabbi and taught 3rd grade and Jewish studies at Haifa University. In 1957 he came to the United States where he became a beloved Rabbi of his congregation in Newark, NJ until his retirement in 1986. At that time, he and his wife, Susan retired in Rio Rancho, NM. Late in his retirement at age 90, Martin began writing fiction novels and went on to self-publish eight fiction novels. A Graveside Service will be held at 1:30pm, Tuesday, March 22, 2011, Vista Verde Memorial Park, 4310 Sara Road SE and Meadowlark Lane, Rio Rancho, NM.
