Edward was born in Abilene TX on May 25, 1937 and went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 30, 2017 in Albuquerque NM. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Laughlin of Albuquerque, six daughters: Linda Spencer (Chris) Sandia Park, NM, Laurie Laughlin, Albuquerque, Stacy Gorman (David), Las Cruces NM, Janet Butterfield (John) Birmingham AL, Karie Dumler, Albuquerque and Nicole Marquez (Jaime), El Paso TX, brother Buster B Laughlin Jr. (Judy) of Phoenix and his precious grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Buster B Laughlin Sr. and Linda S Laughlin, his brother, Thomas L Laughlin and great granddaughter, Lily Gorman.
Edward was a 1959 graduate of West Point Military Academy and served in the US Army for 10 years and Air Force for 10 years, retiring from the Air Force as Lt Colonel in 1979. He and two friends then founded a laser research and development company, Energy Optics in Las Cruces NM. He retired from that company in the early 90’s and worked part time as Director of Missions for the Rio Grande Baptist Association in the Las Cruces area. The Laughlin’s were active members of FBC, Las Cruces, where Ed served as a deacon and Bible teacher.
Edward and Carolyn moved to Sandia Park NM in 1999, where Ed served for several years as a volunteer with the Baptist Convention of NM church planting division, with the Baptist Builders of BCNM and as a board member of the NM Baptist Foundation. They moved to ABQ in 2008 where he and Carolyn were members of Monterey Baptist Church.
Ed loved sports, especially football and enjoyed being a mid-school and high school football and basketball referee, traveling around NM on weekends. He was an avid Cowboys fan until Tom Landry retired and then didn’t care who won! He was always innovative, creative and excited about the next adventure in life.
But Ed’s first love was his family and being Dad was his greatest joy. He was the most loving, patient and amazing husband, father, grandfather and friend and his life exemplified God’s love and forgiveness. He will be greatly missed by all of us.
