Elaine V. Monaghan

September 19, 1939 — June 29, 2015

Monaghan, Elaine V.

Elaine Valerie Milstrey Monaghan died in her home on the morning of June 29, 2015, in Albuquerque, NM. She was 75. Elaine graduated from Colonie Central High School in 1956 and Albany Medical College School of Nursing in 1960.  She was among the first Board Certified Geriatric Nurse Practitioners in the United States. She cared for patients for many years at the University of New Mexico Hospital and the UNM Family Practice Clinic. Most recently she served patients at Albuquerque’s Princeton Place, where she continued to work until shortly before her death. Throughout Elaine’s long career, she touched the lives of countless patients and their families. She was an advocate for improving the quality of life for seniors in New Mexico and for death with dignity. Her death was in accord with her beliefs on both of those issues. Elaine was born on September 19, 1939, in Schenectady, NY. Over the course of her life, she lived in Colorado, Maryland, Nebraska, and South Dakota. For the last 41 years Elaine lived in Albuquerque. She married James R. Monaghan in 1961. They were married until his sudden death in 1985.  Elaine is survived by her daughter, Colleen; son, Gordon; and four beautiful grandchildren.  The family will hold a memorial and celebration of Elaine’s life in Albuquerque on Sunday, August 23. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to Compassion and Choices, Gift Processing Center, PO Box 485, Etna, NH, 03750-04854.  To view information or leave a condolence please visit www.danielsfuneral.com
