Elizabeth "Betty" Louise McIntosh

May 4, 1925 — September 21, 2014

McIntosh, Elizabeth " Betty " Louise Osborn
passed away at age 89 in Socorro, NM, on the eve of the autumnal equinox, on Sunday, September 21, 2014.  Betty was born in Salt Lake City, UT on May 4, 1925, to  Charles M. and Louise (Piper) Osborn. She moved with her family to several cities - including Seattle (WA), Chehalis (WA), Memphis (TN), Boston (MA), and Onalaska (WA), where she graduated from high school in 1943. From there, she earned a B.A. in journalism from the University of Washington, and went on to become a reporter and editor for the Anacortes American. She married Lee A McIntosh in Anacortes and settled in Everett, WA in 1953. Betty was a devoted mother. While raising four children with Lee, she also earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Washington and served many years as Director of Everett Head Start. Betty came to love the New Mexico desert during several extended visits and move to Alamogordo in 1986, where she worked as a counselor and a founding member of Alamogordo Mental Health.  She retired in 2001 and moved to Socorro, NM where she quickly made many friends. Betty was a woman of great spirit, will and curiosity. In Alamogordo, she became a loyal "Big Sister" and also held a demanding volunteer position on the Citizen's Review Board, which monitored children in Child Protective Services. In Socorro, Betty volunteered many years for the Puerto Seguro center for the homeless. She was also an active member of Unitarian fellowships for much of her life. A true wordsmith, Betty loved poetry, and in later years enjoyed writing groups and her book club. She kept active by walking and regularly working out with her morning swim exercise friends. A devoted mother, sister, aunt, and friend, Betty lives on in many hearts. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Lee A. McIntosh; her parents; and her brother, Herbert Osborn. Betty is survived by her children: Bill McIntosh and wife, Nelia Dunbar, Carol McIntosh and husband, Bill Bulick, Lynn McIntosh and husband, Janos Laboda, and Murray McIntosh and wife, Gabrielle; brother, Bill Osborn; sister, Barbara Sandford; grandchildren: Anthony, Matthew,  and Colin McIntosh and Eva Bulick; great grandson, Caleb Filley. As per Betty's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Betty's life is planned for Sunday, November 23, 2014 at 1:00 pm at El Sombrero Restaurant, 210 Mesquite, Socorro, NM.  All are welcome. A second celebration is planned for the Pacific Northwest in the spring. Our family is deeply grateful to the Socorro Good Samaritan caretakers, for their kindness and patient care for Betty during the last two years of her life. Any donations to Good Samaritan or Puerto Seguro would honor our memories of Betty. Betty's care has been entrusted to
