Lemons, Elizabeth Bailey
Elizabeth Bailey Lemons went to be with the Lord and join her husband Charles on November 15, 2017.
Elizabeth or “Libby” as she was known to her friends was born in Anson County, NC on May 15, 1927. She went to work at a young age at United Mills in Mt. Gilead, NC and there learned the sewing skills for which she would be known for the rest of her life. She married Charles Lemons of Troy, NC in 1947. They settled in Mt. Gilead, but their lives were soon disrupted by the Korean War. Charles re-enlisted and began a 30-year military career. Thus, Libby assumed her role as a proud military wife supporting Charles until his death in 2011. They had one child, Wanda.
Libby was known for her skill as a seamstress, making clothes for both herself and her daughter. In later life she began quilting and made quilts for family, friends, and Project Linus. She had an unique way with animals and amazed everyone by “taming” a roadrunner named “Sweetie” who used to eat hamburger from her hands. She was also a talented gardener.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Frederick Lemons; parents, Benjamin F. Bailey and Myrtle Alice Scarlett Bailey; brother John Walter Bailey; and sisters Alice Morris and Jennie Dunn. She is survived by her sister Fannie Mae Brown and daughter Wanda Lorene Lemons Umber and son-in-law Roger Umber.
Visitation is scheduled for November 21, 2017 from 9:30-10:30 am at Daniels Funeral Home on Carlisle. A graveside service at the Santa Fe National Cemetery will follow at 2:15 pm. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Hospice of New Mexico and Home Care Assistance. A very special thank you to the staff and residents of Brookdale Valencia who have supported Libby and been part of her extended family for the past 6 years. Memorial gifts may be made to the New Mexico Veterans Integration Center http://nmvic.org/contributefinancial.html or the Museum of the American Military Family (http://militaryfamilymuseum.org/donate/).
