Cuevas, Elvira C
Went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 9, 2016. She was born on June 1, 1924 to Francisco and Arquelina Contreras from Santa Rita, NM. Elvira is survived by her children; Judy Cuevas Shoemaker and Paul A. Cuevas and Diana Cuevas; her grandchildren, Elena Cuevas Davis and Will Davis and Abel A. Cuevas; her great grandchildren, Jillian Montoya-Cuevas and Kyle Davis; sisters, Esther Martinez, Alice Anaya and Mary Lou Contreras; brother, Frank Contreras and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elvira graduated from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX class of 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education; graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminar, class of 1950 with a Masters of Religious Education; graduated from the University of Houston at Clear Lake, class of 1976 with a Masters of Science in Education/Bilingual Early Childhood. Elvira taught in various schools in San Lorenzo, NM, Eloy and Casa Grande. AZ and in Galveston, Texas where she retired from teaching in 1988.
Elvira met Paul S. Cuevas on January 24, 1942 and were married on July 24, 1948 in Bayard. NM at the First Baptist
Church. Together, Elvira and Paul faithfully served the Lord for 53 years in various capacities within the Baptist Conventions of NM, AZ and Texas. Elvira served as a translator for the WMU Royal Service publication as known as La Tarera. Elvira and Paul were also appointed as Home Missionaries by the SBC Home Mission Board. Prior to leaving from Texas to Arizona, Elvira had been elected as the state Spanish Baptist Convention WMU Director.
Due to many roles that Elvira and Paul served within, each summer was spent in conferences held at the Glorieta Facility. Together, Elvira and Paul Cuevas served in the following pastorates: 1. Brooklyn Heights Mission of Broadway Baptist Church in Ft. Worth. TX 91948-1950), 2. Mision Bautista El Buen Pastor (1950-1951) Del Rio, TX, 3. Fruit Avenue Spanish Baptist Mission (Southern Baptist) today know as Iglesia Bautista Central ( 1951-1955),
4. Primera Iglesia Bautista (1955-1962) Wichita Falls, Texas, 5. Mision Bautista El Calvario ( 1962-1966), Mision of FBC/Dallas, Texas, 6. Mision Bautista Emmanuel (1966-1970) Casa Grande, AZ, 7. Primera Iglesia Bautista (1970-1988) Galveston, Texas.
Elvira and Paul retired in 1988 and moved to Rio Rancho, NM. They joined FBC of Alameda in 1989 and faithfully served as Associate Pastor for children ministries. Elvira joined FBC of Rio Rancho in 2012 where she faithfully served as a Sunday School Teacher until health prevented her from continuing.
