IN CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE OF EMANUEL ALEXANDER GREENE
NOVEMBER 5, 1923 ?? APRIL 26, 2012 Emanuel Greene was born on November 5, 1923 in West Virginia. While living there he had two children, Jerome and Phyllis. In 1943 he married Garland Watlington. From that union, seven children were born: Darryl, Ronell, Marilyn, Larry, Reginald, Richard and Mark. Emanuel?s life was guided by two principles; care and love of family and love for his neighbor. Countless friends tell stories of his having helped them through financial and emotional struggles. These he accomplished quietly, seeking no applause from man, but doing all with a loving heart and to the glory of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. In his youth, Emanuel had the wonderful experience of being the only son in a family of five children. Growing up in this household he felt keenly his senses of paternal and fraternal responsibilities. It was in that home that he developed his philosophy of living and caring for family. He carried those into his marriage. After serving honorably as a Buffalo Soldier in World War II, Manny moved his family to New York City where he worked hard at the jobs then available to him. Eventually, he tested and passed the exam for Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Officer, where he eventually rose to the rank of Captain. At that time, he was only the second African American to achieve that distinction. Captain Greene was beloved by all police officers under his direction, and they continue until today heralding his wisdom and just dealings with them. The first home he and Garland owned was in Jamaica, Queens. At various times throughout their years there, all nine children resided in the happy home on 111th Avenue. Known to all of his children?s friends affectionately as "Pop, this was the house that all of the youth in the community gravitated toward. From morning until night the house was filled with laughter and love, and everyone sought Pop?s council on matters of education, relationships and life in general. He was the smartest man we knew and he could speak intelligently on any subject, at any time. Later, when he moved his family to their newly built home in Long Island, this phenomena of being the community home continued. The secret to his popularity was his boundless love and everyone was affected by his generosity. Who can forget his famous Sunday pancake breakfasts and bible studies? The marathon scrabble games? Or, the days and nights in the bowling alleys where he could be found with his sons and their friends? He was both friend and father to all, and he will be greatly missed. As an adult, Emanuel completed his academic education, and upon retiring from his position as Police Captain, cofounded a successful family business with his sons. He remained a part of that enterprise until he relocated with Garland to Rio Rancho, New Mexico where he devoted his full time to study of the Word of God. His favorite scriptures can be found in what is known as "the love chapter, in 1st Corinthians Chapter 13 and he frequently quoted Proverbs 4:7. Emanuel leaves to celebrate his life his wife of 69 years, Garland Watlington Greene, one sister, seven children, one devoted son-in-law, six daughters-in-law, 23 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, one great, great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves a legacy of love that all who knew him will forever cherish.
