Evangelina Gurule

January 26, 1932 — May 1, 2021

Evangelina (Angie) Gurule
Angie, age 89, peacefully passed away May 1, 2021 after several months of declining health.  Angie was the oldest of nine children born January 26, 1932 in Placitas NM to Martin G Gurule and Maria Salazar Gurule. Angie was raised by her grandparents Nicolas and Eutimia Salazar
Angie lived her life in the Placitas, Bernalillo, and the Albuquerque area.  She graduated from Bernalillo High School in 1950 and went on to hold a multitude of positions mostly those dedicated to the education of children and young adults.  Her last position, from which she retired, was for the Technical Vocational Institute where she worked in the library.
At age 35, Angie became part of the Bernadette Avila family where she remained as one of theirs for over 53 years. All the Avila children and offspring loved Angie and called her Grandma.  Angie took care of Bernadette in Bernadette’s failing years and after Bernadette passed, Angie became our “other” mom.
Angie’s sense of humor, love of the Dallas Cowboys, and total joy of cooking never diminished.  She defended her Cowboys to the end, passed on cooking and her baking talents including recipes to her grandkids. Too many favorite hispanic dishes to list but will always remember her red chili, beans, salsa and Christmas empanadas. Angie’s stories of her youth with her siblings brought smiles and laughter to all those who gathered together.
Angie joined the Catholic Daughters of America through St Joseph’s on the Rio Grande Catholic Church and was committed to their mission of giving. She made lasting friendships through CDA and enjoyed the many meetings and sponsored events.  Angie used her artistic ability to teach her CDA friends and also Catholic Daughters from other parishes how to make Christmas decorations out of natural resources, especially pinecones!
Angie is survived by her sister Ruth Nieto, her brother Martin, several loved nieces and nephews.  Her nieces-Cathy, Sadie, and Julie helped care for Angie as her health deteriorated and her sister Ruth was by her side with each hospital release. Angie enjoyed being with her great-great niece Giuliauna Romero and would relive those memorable occasions with the Avila family.
Angie is also survived by the Avila family: Richard, Keith(Gail), Wayne Avila, Patricia Rose and Darlene(Rod) Quinn; her joy and love of 18 grandkids, 24 great grandkids and 10 great-great grandkids. Angie is preceded in death by son and our beloved brother Robert J Avila (04/13/51-02/19/2021)
The Family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all relatives and friends who were so kind and supportive during this time. Your kindness will always be remembered.
