Buttrey, Ezra John
Age 64, of Carlsbad, NM, passed away Saturday, August 15, 2015 in Albuquerque, NM, after battling dementia and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He was born in Prince, UT to the (late) Ezra H. and Josephine (Nucich) Buttrey. He was a graduate of Carbon High School Class of 1969. Started work at the Sciro Steel Co. in Utah and received his certification in welding. Drafted into the US Army in 1971, he served at Camp Holloway, Pleiku, Vietnam, as a cobra helicopter Crew Chief. In 1974 he returned to work at Sciro Steel Co. until working for a coal mine, US Fuel Co./King Coal in Hiawatha, UT. In 1999 he started working for IMC Potash Inc., now known as MOSAIC in Carlsbad, NM. As a Master Welder, in March of 2011 he became disabled and diagnosed with frontal-lobe dementia and PTSD. He had the honor and privilege to live in a VA medical foster home in Albuquerque. He was a quiet courageous man of God who loved and provided for his family and church. He was a member of Blodgett Street Baptist Church, a life time member of United Mine Workers of America, Local 6363, VFW Post 8703 and a proud American Patriot. John worked emergency mine rescues, was certified in first aid and CPR, drove an ambulance, a certified Steven's Minister, carried a concealed weapon permit, lived drug free donated blood at every opportunity. John loved life, the great outdoors offered all types of exciting adventures, he enjoyed being an Eagle Scout leader, attending Mountain Man rendezvous and school show and tells, Cowboy Christian Camps, Brooks Brothers Chili Suppers, Blue Grass festivals, music, hunting with a bow and gun, fishing, four wheeling, ATVing, carpentry, auto mechanics, gardening and mastered welding.
John is survived by his wife of 17 years, Brenda Deann (Hardin) Buttrey; sons, Jeromie and wife, Sara, Jonathan and wife, Pauline, Joshuah and wife, Brenda, Joey and wife, Nicole, Jared and wife, Kassie and Jaymes; daughters, Janell Traylor and husband, Steven, Tiffany Bishop and husband, Craig, JayLynn (Sissy) Cookie and husband, Heber; 21 grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
A Viewing will be held from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at Garcia Mortuary, 717 Stover Ave. SW with a Service to follow at 11:30 a.m., Interment to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:15 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held in Carlsbad on Sunday, September 5, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Blodgett Street Baptist Church, 1500 West Blodgett in Carlsbad. Pallbearers will be, Dave Gill, Jeromie Buttrey, Jonathan Buttrey, Joey Buttrey, Jared Buttrey, Jaymes Buttrey and Craig Bishop. Honorary Pallbearers will be, Joshuah Buttrey, Heber Cookie, Johnny Garner, John Armstrong, Chris Armstrong, Dennis Milano, Gene Tarvin and Ken Whiteaker.
