Fonda was born in Clayton, New Mexico on September 6, 1931 to Joseph and Zelma Scott. She graduated from Clayton High School in 1949, and briefly attended college at Southwestern Adventist University. She married her hometown sweetheart Fred Kear on January 11, 1953. Shortly after their marriage she joined him in Hawaii where he was stationed during his service in the U.S Navy.
Fonda and Fred settled in Albuquerque to raise their three children. It was Fonda’s greatest joy to be involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Throughout her children’s school years, she could be counted on to serve as room mother, in the PTA, and as library volunteer. She continued to be active in the lives of her grandchildren picking them up from school each day and spending the summer days getting into all the best kinds of mischief. Her love for children poured over onto her great-grandchildren who never failed to bring a smile to her face.
Fonda thoroughly enjoyed her career as a medical assistant and office manager for general surgeon Dr. Gordon Scott. She took great pride in keeping the office running smoothly and assisting with medical procedures.
Fonda was a faithful member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. One of her greatest passions was serving in the children’s divisions. She was a diligent student of the Bible and dearly loved her Sabbath School class led by her favorite teacher, her husband Fred.
Fonda was a warm and welcoming friend who loved to be with people. She could spend hours visiting with her family and friends, often at the kitchen table over a cold “sodee water” or playing a mean game of 42. She was always sure to share a laugh reminiscing over childhood antics with her brother Johnny. She had a great love for her hometown Clayton and remained a loyal subscriber to the Union County Leader.
The essence of Fonda’s love and interest in all those around her could be summed up in this quote that she left hanging at her desk: “People are fun. Whether they are delightful, amusing, or appalling, they are all interesting. Be alert to God’s variety. Be open to people. Meet and observe them with expectancy, intrigued by what you will discover. Whether they are personally attractive or not, this is adventure, and it’s available every day.” – Unknown
