Frankie Martinez
Nov. 15, 1925 - Aug. 3, 2011 Frankie Martinez, 85, of Kirtland, passed from this Earth and went home to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011. He was born Nov. 15, 1925, in Counselors, the only child of Son-Sue Pinto and Rueben Sandoval. He was of the Red Street Running into Water Clan, and born for the Red Palm People Clan.
He married Juanita Sandoval Martinez and later moved his family to San Juan County. He worked as a rancher and laborer for Russell Foutz Running Horse Ranch in Kirtland until his retirement.
Frankie was a simple, humble man. He always had a kind, gentle soul, and rarely raised his voice or got upset with anyone. He believed in hard work, and did just that all of his life. He believed in reverence and respect for all things. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also attended the Native American Church in his later years, where he mostly held the position of Fireman.
As a young man, he worked on the Northern Railroad until he was drafted into the armed forces. He was in the 67th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, stationed at Fort Knox, Ky. He served in Germany during the Allied occupation after World War II, where he was in the 28th Infantry Division, 110th Infantry Regiment.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Juanita; and his son, Franklin.
He is survived by his children, Julian Sandoval of Farmington, Gene (Delphine) Martinez of Window Rock, Ariz., Marlena (Fasi) Iongi of Provo, Utah and Bernice (Daryl) Wright of Kirtland; 14 grandchildren, Jared Wright, Neomai and Paul Hola, Limiahi and Emily Iongi, Janessa and Matt Wheat, Juanita Mila, Mikaela Martinez, Benjamin Iongi, John Martinez and Jacob Martinez, Ariel Sandoval and Dremen Sandoval; and seven great-grandchildren, Kolotita, Marlena, Charlotte, Alexander, Semisi, Kitione, Juanita, Chris. All who knew and loved Frankie will miss him.
Pallbearers are Gene Martinez, Jared Wright, Paul Hola, John Martinez, Limihai Iongi, and Benjamin Iongi.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, at Cope Memorial Chapel, 404 W. Arrington St. in Farmington
Interment will be at Memory Gardens, 6917 E. Main St. in Farmington.
A reception will follow the services, at 1210 Griffin Ave. in Farmington.
