George Herman Reid, Sr.

George H. Reid Sr. long time resident of Farmington , passed away on the evening of November 22nd 2008 at San Juan Regional Medical Center . He was born to William Preston Reid and Elizabeth Kircher Reid on the family farm near Akron, Colorado on November 7th, 1921. George was the 6th of 7 children raised on their rural farm N.E. of Akron where he graduated High School before entering Colorado State University to study Veterinary medicine. He left school to join the United States Marine Corps in 1942 where he served and fought in the WWII Island hopping campaign in the South Pacific. He met his wife and love of his life on the train ride home from being discharged from the military. Although he and Betty Jean Tunison knew each other through school activities the fateful meeting sparked a lifetime of adventures. The two were married February 28th,1946 and had 5 children. Over the next 61 years they enjoyed each other's company on countless camping and fishing trips and often flipped a coin to see who would return home to water the lawn and tend to "town stuff". They re-located to the Farmington area in 1957 after a try at ranching in Southwest Colorado. George went to work roughnecking and eventually retired as a switcher for the Gas Company of New Mexico in 1986. George was preceded in death by his wife, both parents and all of his siblings, he was the last of a very outstanding group. He is survived by his children; James Reid and wife Yvonne of Fort Morgan, CO. Steve Reid and wife Ellen of Casper, WY, David Reid and wife Dianne of Portland, OR, Betty Rice of Farmer's Branch, TX and George Reid, Jr. of Bloomfield. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be given to the charity of your choice in George's name.
