Gerry served his country in the Army National Guard out of St. Cloud, MN.  They were activated and sent to Camp Rucker, Alabama.  His government service career of 50 years began with the US Department of Agriculture in St Paul, MN.   He then served as criminal investigator with the Internal Revenue Service, Intelligence Division for 22 years in various locations: Fargo, ND, Aberdeen, SD, Springfield, IL, Rockford, IL and Albuquerque, NM.  After retiring from IRS government service, Gerry worked as Director of Audits for New Mexico Credit Union League, Director of Internal Audit City of Albuquerque, and accountant for the American Legion Post 49.  Gerry served as Adjutant and Commander of America Legion Post 428 in Waite Park, MN and was recently honored at a ceremony for his continuous 60 year membership.

Baseball was his lifelong enjoyment.  As a young boy he played on the backlot field.  He pitched for the Sportsman team in St. Cloud.  He coached his two sons at Road Runner Little League District 5 in Albuquerque and volunteered as manager and umpire there for over 20 years.

Gerald was preceded in death by his father, Paul Schaefer, his mother, Mayme Karash-Schaefer, his brothers, Bob and Jim Schaefer, and his sister, Virginia Fleegel-Becker.

A fair and gentle man, Gerry often let his silence speak for him. What he did say was full of wit, wisdom, and love.  He was devoted to his family and his Catholic Faith.  He sang in the choir, taught School of Religion, was a Eucharistic minister, took communion to the homebound, and was active with Senior Adult Ministry.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint John XXIII 4831 Tramway Ridge Drive NE Albuquerque, NM 87111 at 10 am on Tax Day, April 17th.  In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made to the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, NM.  Saint Francis Convent, 116 - 8th Ave SE, Little Falls, MN 56345-3597.
