Glen Lee Gabehart

January 4, 1931 — December 3, 2008

Glen Lee Gabehart, 77, passed peacefully from this life to be with his Lord on Dec. 3, 2008 at home in Aztec. He was born Jan. 4, 1931 in Earth, TX to Lloyd and Mary Gabehart. Glen's family moved to Farmington, NM in the mid 1940's. After graduating from Farmington High School in 1949, he went on to earn his BA and MA Degrees from NMSU. Glen served in the US Army as 1st Lt. in Fort Riley, KS. He was an Agriculture Teacher in various locations in NM from 1956 - 1967. Glen served as Director of Manpower Development and Training Programs under Governor Cargo. Glen was employed as the Director of Vocational Education at San Juan College in 1969.One of his first responsibilities was to prepare a feasibility study to have an area vocational school for the college. His first year he started many programs some of which were in the areas of secretarial training, accounting, welding, auto mechanics, drafting, and nursing. Glen was a chairman of the search committee that hired Dr. James Henderson as president. He worked for San Juan College until 1977 when he accepted the position of Associate Director of the Gallup Branch of UNM. In 1979, Glen went to Carlsbad as Associate Director. He retired from NMSU at Carlsbad in 1984. Glen served on the Aztec School Board from 1993 to 1995. He was inducted into the SJC Hall of Fame in 2000. Glen was chosen as Deacon at the First Baptist Church in Aztec and an active member of the Gideons for several years. Glen was loved by all who knew him and touched many lives throughout his career and through his love of the Lord. Glen married Carolyn Johnson on May 19, 1978. Glen and Carolyn enjoyed traveling together and had many wonderful trips. Glen loved camping, fishing and being in the mountains. He also spent many memorable years with his grandchildren raising and showing show lambs at the San Juan County Fair. Later, he and Carolyn showed breeding stock at state fairs in Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. Special thanks to Dr. Jeff Neidhart and the wonderful nurses at the cancer center. Shawna Reid, our niece, has been especially wonderful these many years Glen has suffered. Also, a great big thank you to Northwest New Mexico Hospice for their care these last three months. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey, his parents, Lloyd and Mary, and brother, Melvin. Glen is survived by his wife Carolyn; daughters, Rhonda (Dan) Auld, Cheryl Johnson, and Diane (Richard) Fenton; stepsons, Don (Judy) Johnson, Kevin (Hiedi) Johnson, and Mike (Debby) Johnson; stepdaughter, Linda (Ted) Dennard; eighteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Jesse Leath, Chris Soens, Cole Dennard, Jason Johnson, Travis Johnson, Shawn Johnson, and Adam Johnson.
