  Helen M. Gelb

Helen Marie (Marshall) Gelb of Albuquerque NM, age 91, passed away Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the UNM Hospital. She was born on April 12, 1926, in Breckenridge CO to George T. and Marie (Lindquist) Marshall.

  Helen lived her early life in Kremling, CO, graduating from Kremling Union High School as Valedictorian of a class numbering 23 students. She then graduated from the University of Colorado with a BS in nursing in 1948. Helen worked as a nurse in Colorado, Wisconsin, and Illinois and for Illinois Central Railroad. After retiring from nursing in February of 1987 she worked alongside her husband in his financial plans/insurance business.

  Helen was married to Herbert Gelb of Chicago, IL in February of 1964. Together they made lifelong friends and enjoyed family, pets, western art and dancing. During her life Helen, an avid reader and gardener, received numerous awards at county fairs for her vegetables and breads. She also won medals in the Senior Olympics Cross Country Skiing. After moving to Albuquerque NM Helen became an active volunteer at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, Petroglyph National Monument, NM, Albuquerque Rescue Mission (now known as Steelbridge), Kiwanis club, and Friends of the Library reviewing the Southwestern collection for the monthly book sale.

  Helen was preceded in death by her parents and sisters; Sylvia (Burrows), Jarrett, Elizabeth (Lee) Sheard, Dorothy (Joe) Carroll and great nephew Bill Broersma.

   Helen is survived by husband, Herbert Gelb of Albuquerque, NM, his children Alan (Angelita) Gelb of Freemont CA and Andrea Gelb of Duluth MN. Grandchildren Abigail (Mathew) Fruzza of Davis CA, Adam (Fiance Gabriella Gardella) Gelb of Alamo, CA., great grandchildren; Elio and Gianna Fruzza, niece Peggy Broersma of Albuquerque NM, nephew Jim Mullis of Clayton, NC as well as three grandnieces and a grandnephew.

  Memorial services will be held Thursday March 22 at 2:00 PM, Daniels Family Funeral Services. 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE Albuquerque NM 87109.

Donations may be given in Helen's honor to Helen Gelb Memorial Fund supporting the College of Nursing at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
