Schlaefer, Herman H. Jr.
Age 89, October 24, 1922-January 29, 2012 Albuquerque, New Mexico. After a courageous battle with cancer, Herman passed away peacefully at his home in Albuquerque. Herman, better known as Dick, was born and raised on Staten Island, New York . Dick, retired after 20 years in the United States Navy, as a Chief Petty Officer, serving aboard the USS Saratoga and the USS West Virginia. His many honors included; the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, the National Defense Service Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Medal, the American Defense Ribbon, the WWII Occupation Army Ribbon, the WWII Victory Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the China Service Ribbon, and the Purple Heart. He then settled in Lincoln, New Hampshire and after 20 years retired from Metropolitan Insurance Agency. He and his wife then relocated to the sunny southwest, living in Albuquerque, New Mexico for the past 12 years. Dick was one of three children born to the late Anna and Herman Schlaefer Sr. and was the much beloved husband of his beautiful wife of 65 years, Mary Frances (Charron) Schlaefer. Dick will forever be remembered by his loving children: Kurt Schlaefer, Richard Schlaefer, Karen Gallagher, Mary Kay James, Genie Smith, Mark Schlaefer, John Schlaefer and Tracey Brumlik; 17 treasured grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and countless other family members and friends. Dick loved reading mystery novels, playing cribbage and working in his garden. Memorial service will be held at Church of the Risen Savior on 7701 Wyoming Blvd NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87109, on February 10, 2012 at 10:00 am.
