Irene Tafoya (Nene), passed away peacefully at home in Corrales, surrounded by her loving family January 8, 2016. Born on June 26, 1928 in Las Aguitas, NM to Fidel and Ninfa Valdez, Irene was a life long Catholic and had a loving relationship with God and all of her family. Irene married Tomas Tafoya in 1947 after only 6 weeks of courting. Together they raised their 7 children: Dolores, Tony (Debby), Gloria (Michael-deceased), Diana (Joseph), Mark (Jean), Joseph (Yvonne), and Edwina (Mario). Irene worked for the New Mexico Welfare Department, Alameda Greenhouse, the New Mexico Extension Services, and the US Census Bureau. Irene belonged to the Catholic Daughters Court 1880 at San Ysidro Parish. She was a member of New Mexico Extension Club, taught Spanish at Corrales Senior Center, and volunteered at Corrales library. Irene helped those in need of rides to doctors’ appointments and grocery shopping. Hobbies included traveling, vegetable and flower gardening, quilting, fishing, camping, yard sales, time with friends and family. Irene was an excellent cook and her kitchen and home was open to everyone. Irene loved sharing her knowledge, skills and many talents just for the asking. Irene was preceded in death by her "Viejo" of 52 years, Tomas Tafoya; brothers, Bernardino and Fidel Valdez; sister-in-law Corina; great-grandchildren Blue Haven and Elijah. She is survived by her 7 children; brothers, Casey and Eloy (Helen); sisters: Viola, Lulu, Beatrice, and Sofia; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces; nephews; cousins, and friends. A Visitation will be held Sunday, January 10, 2016, 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm with a Rosary being recited at 6:30 pm at San Ysidro Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, January 11, 2016 at 10:30 am at San Ysidro. Interment will be held Wednesday, January 13, 2016, at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and god-sons. A special thanks to Dr. Torres, Brenda and Lori of Hospice Compassus for their compassionate care of our mother.
