Jacinto Ulibarri

After a long and wonderful life, Jacinto “Jack” Ulibarri, age 99, laid down his burdens and entered into eternal rest on Saturday, October 12, 2019.  He was born on January 10th 1920, at home, in Polvadera, NM to Maria de La Luz and Eliseo Ulibarri.  He was preceded in death by his parents and all his brothers.  Manuel and his wife Virginia, Santiago and his wife Bernardita, Alejandro and his wife Jenny, Candido and his wife Judy, as well as by his nieces; Corina Ulibarri and Suzanna Reina Ulibarri-Barela, and nephews Antonio Ulibarri, Jose Eusebio Ulibarri, Lawrence Ulibarri, and Albert Ulibarri. He is survived by his daughter, Nadine Ulibarri-Keller and husband Deacon Nicholas Keller, sons Benjamin Ulibarri and Roger Ulibarri, and his grandson Eric Ulibarri and granddaughter Kirstin Keller and her two sons Nicholas and Jobe Hawkinson.  He leaves behind many nieces and nephews who adored him and because he knew no strangers he leaves many special friends. Jack was a self-made and self-taught man, receiving formal education only up to the third grade.  He was only able to make it to the third grade because he was needed back on the farm and when he got old enough to work full-time was then taken out of school altogether.  His first job was picking cotton at age seven and then went on to herd sheep in the San Lorenzo Canyon area as well as in the Mogollon Mountains.  He tried many times, like his brothers, to enlist in the armed forces to fight for his country during WWII, but was declared ineligible - his only regret.  He left home, moving to McNary Arizona, and worked in a lumber mill, learning much about the process of harvesting trees and then turning them into the different types of uses for the lumber.  He returned to Socorro with his wife and three children and was employed by the Perlite Company where he suffered an industrial accident when he was pinned by a forklift that broke bones in his neck.  He not only survived the accident, but was not paralyzed as was feared; earning the name of “Superman” and was called that by friends for many years.  Upon his recovery, he became a Police Officer for the City of Socorro and served in that capacity for 10 years.  He retired as a Socorro County employee spending the last years of his work life supervising the County Road Department. Dad loved to travel and nothing made him happier than surprising a friend or family member with an unexpected visit.  Even into his 90’s he would often get into his car alone and drive to Flagstaff to visit with his nephew Pete!  He knew no strangers, loved meeting new people, getting to know them and often would run into old friends in the unlikeliest places.  He was a crack shot with any caliber gun or rifle and loved nothing more than to go hunting.  He was a great cook, made perfect tortillas and was happy hosting a “matanza” or any other party or get together.  He joined wonderful and good friends for a weekly game of Loteria; winning most of the time.  He continued that love of games and winning into Good Sam where he helped with Bingo, calling out the numbers in his loud booming voice that could be heard throughout the building.  He was Mayordomo at his beloved San Lorenzo for 20 years, making sure that it was opened every day for visitors and that all was safe. Viewing will take place Friday, October 18, 2019, from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm at San Miguel Catholic Church, 403 El Camino Real, Socorro. Rosary will immediately follow at 7:00 pm. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, October 19, 2019, at 9:30 am at San Lorenzo Catholic Church, Polvadera with Father John Anasiudu preciding.  Burial will take place at San Lorenzo Cemetery following service. Pallbearers will be Eric Ulibarri, Kirstin Keller, Kathleen Ulibarri, Jerry Ulibarri, Ramon Ulibarri, and Frank Chavez. Honorary pallbearers will be Pete Ulibarri and Milton Ulibarri.
