Jack A. Herrmann M.D. 07/26/1925 08/16/2013 Join us as we remember Dr. Jack Albert Herrmann who entered through the gates of Heaven into eternal peace on Friday evening, August 16, while surrounded by children and grandchildren. He suffered a stroke which peacefully relieved him from a year of pain, suffering and solitude. In passing, he was surrounded by children and grandchildren. Dr. Herrmann was born in Amarillo, Texas, on the 26th of July, 1925. He was one of seven children born to Aloysius and Almeada Herrmann. He will be laid to rest in Amarillo beside his beloved parents. His remaining siblings, sister Rita Freeman and brother Jerry Herrmann still reside in Amarillo. Jack left college temporarily to volunteer and serve in U.S. Army. As Staff Sergeant he commanded leadership roles in World War II while protecting France and Switzerland from further German advance, earning him, among his plentiful medals, 2 Bronze Stars, 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and honorable discharge at the end World War II, a decorated war hero. Jack then pursued his passion into medicine, earning his MD at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, in both Family Practice and General Surgery. Dr. Herrmann then moved to Albuquerque in 1960 to start his practice, with his beautiful and dedicated wife Mary Lou and their 8 children. This marked the beginning of a rare, passionate medical career, that included routine house-calls for the homebound, transporting patients without means to his office for appointments, a cant-pay/no problem philosophy, and a life of medicine truly in spirit with The Hippocratic Oath, and devotion to our God and Ultimate Healer. For more than 40 years Dr. Herrmann tenderly cared for his patients with a rare old-school approach of limitless time and innate talent in diagnostic and surgical skill expertise, with compassion and dedication to helping his patients, friends, Priests, Nuns, fellow parishioners, even complete strangers. His morals and ethics were in rare abundance. Dr. Herrmann was the physician/surgeon for the AT&SF Railroad. Jacks altruism and devotion to medicine led him to open a clinic in Moriarity, NM where he spent Wednesday afternoons for many years of his practice serving the the needy in the area. After closing his office at La Mesa Medical Center he continued to tend to practice as locum tenen throughout New Mexico, Arizona and Texas, in emergency rooms, Indian Healthcare clinics, and when offered a contract position in correctional facilities after his short but impressive locum tenens there, he accepted and served the prisoners as Healer, both physically and spiritually as he would share and encourage Faith in the lives of the incarcerated. His family and friends will remember Jack as a devout Christian who spent his life devoted to God in his unyielding faith as a Catholic. He had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, devoured books on all subjects, knocked out crosswords in minutes, became a gemologist through correspondence, audited myriad classes at UNM in varied subjects of interest, and research anything he wanted to more about. We will fondly remember his ever-present can of Coke, his fervent devotion to his lineage of Yorkshire terriers; his dry sense of humor, his gentle manner, and his warm personality, which were gifts to all in his presence. Dr. Herrmann is a hero and blessing in so many ways to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will miss him immensely. We are grateful to know that he is thankfully, free from pain in the loving, comforting arms of his savior, Jesus Christ. Dr. Herrmann is survived by his children Ollie Herrmann, (Salina, OK), Nancy Hart, (Tulsa, OK), Carolyn Sullivan, (The Colony, TX), Craig Herrmann, (Albuquerque, NM), Mark Herrmann (Allen, TX) and Gary Herrmann (Albuquerque, NM), his 12 grandchildren, Heather Ann Knight (CA), Jenna Cristini (CA), Trisha Merriman (CA), Paul Herrmann (OK), Jason and Matthew Hart (OK), Landon and Taylor Sullivan (TX), Ana and Susie Herrmann (TX), Ryan and Jack Herrmann (NM), and his 3 great-grandchildren, Steven and Mikayla Cristini (CA) and Chelsea Pich (CA). Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene Herrmann (2008), daughter Janet Herrmann (2006), daughter Linda Knight (2010) and former wife, the childrens mother, Mary Lou Burke (2003). Although Jack had many friends throughout the years the family wants to acknowledge his especially close friendships with neighbor Francis Liberman and her daughter/helper extraordinaire Lynn Liberman Long, Mary Montgomery, MD and Delores Lohman, their children Todd and Terri Lohman, former daughter-in-law Karen Carroll.
