Have you heard the one about the guy who liked a good joke?
In loving memory of our dear dad, James Paul Baca, a man whose life was defined by generosity, laughter, and love. He passed away peacefully and surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and kindness.
Born on December 4, 1955, amidst a bustling household, he brought joy to all gatherings from the beginning. He was the sixth of eleven siblings, the most middle of children, learning early to love rock and roll and how to live his life vibrantly, with whistles and tongue pops that turned heads, and booming laughter that filled rooms (and also turned heads).
A proud veteran, Jimmy served his country with honor and dedication throughout his youth. An even prouder father, he was entirely committed to his family and cherished each moment with his three children and his many loved ones.
Those who knew him, even for a short time, quickly discovered that he was a devoted fan of the Cleveland Browns, cheering passionately for the wins and enthusiastically mourning the losses. He was never a fair-weather fan, supporting his teams, his dogs, and all those close to him through every triumph and setback.
He was known for his knack for storytelling and performing. Jimmy’s life revolved around bringing joy to others, spending his extracurricular time as an actor, volunteer chaplain, pickleball partner, and being the friend with a truck whenever one was needed.
Jimmy was a collector who never met a bus he didn’t like. He was able to see value in even the smallest treasures, adorning his home with cherished finds that reflected his appreciation for life’s simple pleasures and little joys. His ability to sift through rummage and uncover a true showpiece defined him as much as how easily he could give it away to a visitor who showed any interest.
Most of all though, Jimmy was funny. He loved to tell jokes, laugh at jokes, and, most of all, laugh at the jokes he told. He brought a smile to everyone around him. He left a lasting imprint on all of us and will be deeply missed. Like each of the treasures he collected, he was one of a kind.
Though he may no longer be with us in person, our dad’s spirit will live on in the beautiful memories he leaves behind and the love that he shared. May his smile stay with us forever, and the next time we find ourselves laughing at one of our own jokes, may we remember that Jimmy is also there, laughing with us.
