James F. “Jim” Coates, age 79, passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at home in Tijeras, NM.
He is survived by Micky, his wife of nearly 22 years; his son, Steven; his step daughter, Dawn Ostberg; his step son, Jerry Killian; his 3 grandchildren; his great granddaughter, and countless people he called friend.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother and father, Elsie and Russell Coates, and his step daughter Jodie Killian.
Jim was an active ham radio operator for over 50 years, and was a respected part of the New Mexico Ham community. He often volunteered his time by participating in search and rescue events with other Hams, and providing communications services for many different events over the years.
While Jim didn't serve active duty he was a member of the New Mexico Army National Guard, and was glad to do his part in service to his country. He was also proud to have ridden with the New Mexico mounted patrol for several years.
Jim retired from US West in 1990 after over 30 years working for "Ma Bell". Even after retirement he was not content to sit at home, and continued working in the telecommunications field for another 15 years until his health finally forced him to start taking it easy.
He and Micky moved to Tijeras in 2004 to get out of the traffic and bother of the city. He enjoyed his last days at a slower pace, in the peace of his mountain oasis.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Daniels Family Funeral Services, Wyoming Chapel 7601 Wyoming Blvd. NE.
